The incident happened on Friday, April 21 around 5:30 p.m., when 48-year-old Bronx resident Craig Whitfield became involved in a verbal dispute with several people outside of a beauty salon in Mount Vernon at 4 West 3rd St., according to Mount Vernon Director of Communications Timothy Allen.
During this dispute, Whitfield allegedly took out a handgun and fired into the salon, hitting a Mount Vernon woman in the hand. Immediately after this, Whitfield then ran away from the area.
Following the shooting, Mount Vernon Police identified Whitfield as the suspect and learned that he had left New York for Petersburg, Virginia.
Weeks later on Thursday, May 18, Whitfield was taken into custody by the FBI Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, FBI Richmond Field Office, and Petersburg Virginia Police Department, and extradited back to New York on Wednesday, May 31.
He was then booked in Mount Vernon and charged with:
- Second-degree attempted murder;
- Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Whitfield was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court on Thursday, June 1, and then remanded to the Westchester County Department of Corrections.
According to Allen, Whitfield already has an extensive criminal history that includes charges for prior robberies, weapon possession, attempted murder, and manslaughter. At the time of the shooting on April 21, Whitfield had been on parole for a 2012 manslaughter charge out of the Bronx.
